Major changes, tighter mechanics & improved pdf - Naiteborne V0.5 Update


Third big update is here! After a long break, having played a bunch of other systems gave me a lot of inspiration and understanding on how to write tighter mechanics and better flowing logic, especially for what I want the system to be.  (You might see a lot of Daggerheart inspiration coming in! Really enjoyed that system!)

One of the core tenants of this system is to have an instant result mechanic. This means that the players would immediately know if they succeeded or not. No modifiers to add Post-Roll, no thresholds to beat that only the GM Knows, only pure goodness to know if the action succeeded or not. 

Additionally, I learned more about generating PDFs from markdown, allowing me to make cooler looking pages overall! A lot of the extra fluff got removed as well!

All the Important Updates (In no specific order)

  • Attributes have changed name. They feel more obvious to me now for how they can be used!
  • Added the Fantastical Spectrum as our Tiering system.
  • Story Combat is now more akin to Daggerheart. No turns, but during this time the GM gains Fear Tokens when the players do certain actions. 
  • Danger & Effect Levels are substituded by Desperate Action Rolls. These remove a certain amount of dice to be rolled if the action is more difficult than normal.
  • Back to one XP Tracker.
  • Skills are now Dice Tier based. The skill dice starts at a D4, and can be improved all the way to a D12. The same resoltuion mechanics still apply of 4-5 Messy result and 6+ a Succes. 
  • Re-added Group Action Rules.
  • Updated Trips & Travel rules to be more like Engagement rolls from Blades in the Dark. 
  • Removed Flashback Rules. It just doesn't fit this kind of game.
  • Added Adversaries section. 
  • Updated Character Sheet to work with all the new rules!
  • There's no more Magic rules. Magic rules will now come from the Fantastical Feats. See Wizard and Elementalist Feats.
  • Special Abilities are out, Fantastical Feats are in. Major overhaul to how these are called, and how they work. 
    • Archetypes & classes concepts have been removed. Fantastical Feats are now just grouped by Themes.
    • Removed all the Archetype Themes.
    • Updated all the Class Themes to fit within the new rules and systems.
    • Removed Barbarian.
    • Added Guardian, Ranger and Wizard.

And a bunch of smaller changes to accomodate all the above! 

To close, the system has changed quite drastically in comparison to the last version. With my playtesting it feels much tighter, flows better and is understood easier. So it sounds like I'm going in the right direction!
